Shiatsu

Shiatsu literally means ‘finger pressure’.  ‘SHI’ ~ finger & ‘ATSU’ ~ pressure.

The client remains fully clothed and a session usually takes place on a padded mat or futon. I also use body cushions (click image to expand it), which gives added support especially if lying on your front or in side position. It is possible to receive Shiatsu sitting on a chair if you are unable to lie down.

Vital energy (Ki in Japanese, Chi in Chinese) flows throughout the body in pathways called meridians. For various reasons this energy can become ‘blocked’ and subsequently produces a symptom. A variety of techniques are used to improve your energy flow. These may include gentle holding, pressure using palms, thumbs, fingers, elbows, knees and feet or more dynamic stretches and rotations, where appropriate.

The effect is relaxing yet invigorating, re-balancing the body to ease any physical and mental tension and awaken the client’s own self healing process.

Sessions are usually 1hr with the first session slightly longer so I can note all the relevant information.

Guidlines for receiving Shiatsu:-

  • loose, comfortable clothing
  • do not eat heavily – 2hrs prior
  • no alcohol before of after
  • drink plenty water after
  • avoid strenuous activity after

The Shiatsu body cushions are very comfortable and versatile and the face cradle is great for supporting your head and neck.  There are attachments that can make the cushions wider than in the image above or create a space in the middle which allows, for example, a pregnant client to lie on their front as the baby is well protected in the space.  The cushions can also be adapted and provide brilliant support for lying in side position or for seated back, neck and shoulder sessions.

My journey with Shiatsu started in 1996 and in 1997 I began studying it in Bangor, North Wales.   In 1998 I switched to the 3 year diploma course with the Glasgow School of Shiatsu.  As well as bookshops and various other venues I did onsite massage (back, neck & shoulder) sessions at The Relaxation Station in Glasgow airport for 5 years.
